"'I will tell you the tale of Tinúviel,' said Strider, 'in brief -- for it is a long tale of which the end is not known; and there are none now, except Elrond, that remember it aright as it was told of old...' He was silent for some time, and then he began not to speak but to chant softly..." - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 11: A Knife in the Dark

When we read The Lord of the Rings, we enter a fairytale, and often, the characters within that tale do the same. On that worrisome night on Weatherop, Strider consoles the little hobbits by pulling them deeper into Faërie with the Tale of Tinúviel, which tells a part of the Lay of Leithian. By listening to the chanting of the future king, the hobbits escape momentarily from their own predicament by imagining the epic of Beren and Lúthien, and their own escape from many perils. Think of the beauty of hearing Aragorn, raised in Rivendell amongst the elves, intoning this story of wonder!

Things to notice in this original, hand-painted Tolkien-inspired art print:

    • Merry and Pippin are not yet used to the fatigues of the long road and are drowsing in the warmth of the fire.

    • Bill the Pony is already starting to recover his spirits and health with kinder folk than his former master.

    • Sam is still not completely sure about their Ranger guide and is looking at Strider somewhat pensively, but given how much this particular hobbit admires poetry, perhaps this moment under the stars does much to overcome his mistrust.

    • Meanwhile, sensitive Frodo gazes up, where the tale of Beren and Lúthien seems to form itself in the smoke as the figures across the night sky amid the stars.

A truly good storyteller can work wonders. If you treasure the gift of imagination, then hanging a print of this dreamy painting in your home could be a testament to what you love. It is a tribute, on my part, to Tolkien’s genius with poetry and lyrics. His words make my thoughts soar, and I know I’m not alone in that. Thank goodness for great tales!
